چکیده

The study was an attempt to determine the dynamics of heartwood formation and the radial and axial distribution of sapwood and heartwood in stems of European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) representing the dominant stand according to Kraft. Correlations were found between the rate of heartwood formation and the social class of tree position in the stand, the age of trees, forest site type and height of trees. Moreover, radial and axial variation was observed in the distribution of analyzed wood zones depending on the height of measurement, the age of cambium and the dimensions of the analyzed tree. Results were analyzed statistically, which facilitated an assessment of the relation between the dynamics of heartwood formation and age, the social class of tree position in the community as well as dimensions, i.e. the thickness of the sapwood ring and the radius of heartwood cylinder. The greatest strength of the relation was determined between the ray of the heartwood and the stem radius (R2 = 0.98), with cambium age and number of heartwood rings (R2 = 0.93). A much smaller relation was determined between the width of the sapwood ring and the stem radius (R2 = 0.13).

Treatability and Durability of Heartwood

Reduced treatability in heartwood can cause reduced retention and penetration of preservatives into heartwood. This can reduce the durability of heartwood compared to the treated sapwood. From an anatomical point of view, the factors which contribute to the lower treatability of heartwood include its high extractive content, high rate of aspirated pits, and smaller pore sizes. Generally, in woo...

Carbon in heartwood, sapwood and bark along stem profile in three Mediterranean Pinus species

Context: Understanding biological processes in forests is necessary to orientate ecosystem management towards potential C sequestration. To achieve this, information is required about changes in forest biomass C pools, including the stem components (bark, sapwood and heartwood). Aims: This study aimed to determine whether there are differences in C concentration in axial and radial directions w...

Radial patterns of carbon isotopes in the xylem extractives and cellulose of Douglas-fir.

Heartwood extractives (nonstructural wood components) are believed to be formed from a combination of compounds present in the adjacent sapwood and materials imported from the phloem. The roles of local compounds and imported material in heartwood formation could have important implications for the wood quality of species having naturally durable wood. Stable isotope composition (delta(13)C) wa...

PUBLICATION III Decay resistance of sapwood and heartwood of untreated and thermally modified Scots pine and Norway spruce compared with some other wood species

Thermal modification has been developed for an industrial method to increase the biological durability and dimensional stability of wood. In this study the effects of thermal modification on resistance against softand brown-rot fungi of sapwood and heartwood of Scots pine and Norway spruce were investigated using laboratory test methods. Natural durability against soft-rot microfungi was determ...

Growth rate and ring width variability of teak, Tectona grandis (Verbenaceae) in an unmanaged forest in East Timor.

Teak (Tectona grandis) is one of the most valuable timbers in international trade and an important species for tropical forestry. Teak is found on the island of East Timor but no information is available on teak growth from this region. A pure stand planted in 1940-50 in the North of East Timor and left unmanaged was studied. Fifteen trees were sampled in October-November 2003 and stem discs ta...
